In Roman times, the luxurious estates of Rome's elite were lined up along the Campanian coast of southern Italy. A particularly splendid example of the need for representation of its wealthy owners and of the construction challenges that had to be overcome for its construction is the sea villa of Capo di Sorrento, enthroned above the Gulf of Naples.
