N2 - From around 300 BC onwards, sanctuaries emerged in the Mediterranean region, staged as sacred buildings visible from afar on high terraces. Despite the great effect on architectural history, the genesis of this type of building remains unclear. This is surprising when one looks at a famous Egyptian building that gained new importance at the very moment when the first terrace sanctuaries were built in the Aegean.
