Root nouns in Elfdalian: Categorisation and etymology

Publikation: Bidrag til tidsskriftKonferenceartikelForskningfagfællebedømt

Elsewhere (Hansen 2014: 20-50, 2016) I have presented a hypothesis defining a set of rules according to which we may categorise Ger-manic root nouns into three chronological layers, describing in that regard how the inherited root nouns belonging to the first and old-est layer generalise their radical ablaut grade in accordance with the structure of their roots. However, my former two contributions did not include the Elfdalian material exhaustively. Elfdalian possesses three root nouns not included in my original studies: gą̊t ‘door post’, nųot ‘note (mus.)’ and syv ‘heddle’, all of which we may assign to the most recent layer III. Also, a considerable amount of root nouns belonging to layer III in other North Germanic varieties are not in-flected as root nouns in Elfdalian at all.
